Zeng Guofan dominated the world by an iron army.

Zeng Guofan's army has the following obvious characteristics compared with the Qing army and other regimental training armed forces:

1、 The soldiers are all from the simple and healthy Hunan villagers, who are both easy to train and brave and good at fighting. They resolutely reject the oily citizens and veterans in cities and towns to avoid damaging the team. Most of the officers came from the scholars among his relatives and friends, who demanded that they would devote themselves to "defending the way" and "being loyal to the king", not be eager for quick success and instant benefit, and resolutely put an end to the struggle for power and profit of the noble officers of the Eight Banners of the Qing Dynasty.

2、 The father and son, brothers and soldiers with other blood relations are grouped in the same organization, and the kinship relationship is used to maintain the soldiers, so that the soldiers can help each other when fighting, and can only win, not fail. If it fails, the whole clan will suffer genocide. Zeng Guofan's move was indeed very effective. It turned a national army into a clansman army. The so-called "war depends on your brothers, and you can go to battle without your father and son" has greatly improved the combat effectiveness. This pioneering act of Zeng Guofan set the precedent for China's modern warlords.

3、 In terms of organization, Zeng Guofan stipulated that each battalion soldier should obey only one battalion officer, and the whole army should obey only one Zeng Guofan. This not only improved the combat effectiveness of the organization and command, but also established a private army for Zeng Guofan.

  “打仗还靠亲兄弟，上阵不离父子兵”，  

   曾国藩纵横天下，靠的是一支铁军。

    曾国藩的军队与清军和其他团练武装相比，有如下明显的特点：

　　一、士兵均来自质朴壮健的湖南乡民，既易于训练，又勇悍善战，坚决拒收城镇油滑市民和老兵油子，以免带坏了队伍。军官则多来自他的亲友中的读书人，要求肯为“卫道”、“忠君”而献身，不能急功近利，坚决杜绝清廷八旗贵族军官的争权夺利。

　　二、把父子、兄弟以及有其他血缘亲属关系的士兵编在同一组织内，利用宗族亲缘关系维系士兵，使士兵打仗时能互相救助，且只能胜利，不能失败。一旦失败，全宗族就会遭到族灭之祸。曾国藩的这一招的确十分有效，把一支国家的军队变成了宗族军队，所谓“打仗还靠亲兄弟，上阵不离父子兵”，果然大大地提高了战斗力。曾国藩的这一创举，开了中国近代军阀的先河。

　　三、在组织上，曾国藩规定，每营士兵只服从营官一人，全军只服从曾国藩一人。这样既提高了组织指挥的战斗力，也为曾国藩建立了一支私人的军队。
