The Buddhism of our master Sakyamuni Buddha can be summarized into three points: not creating evil karma that harms all living beings, pursuing good karma of body, mouth and mind, and often being good at regulating our own worries. This is the true Buddhism. The Huayan Sutra says, "It is all Buddhism to do no evil, to practice all good deeds, and to purify its meaning." That is why people who convert to Buddhism should not pay attention to whether they have such pseudonyms as conversion certificates, but should focus on the benevolence of interests and sentiments. At all times, I can benefit the poor sentient beings as much as I can. This is the unique behavior of Mahayana Bodhisattva, and it is indispensable for those who have developed Bodhicitta. Because the essence of the eighty-four thousand Dharma sects mentioned by Buddha is the Bodhicitta, the essence of the Bodhicitta is the heart that benefits all living beings directly or indirectly, so the heart that only rescues all living beings also surpasses all the merits and virtues of the world's effective laws, such as the saying of Quiet Heaven Bodhisattva: "It is better to initiate the heart of mercy than to provide for such beings."

And the most precious thing for all living beings is their lives. Saving them from the death line is the greatest virtue for them, and mercilessly interrupting their lives is the greatest persecution for them. It is the duty of Mahayana Bodhisattva to abstain from killing and release them, and it is also the greatest convenience for the complete realization of Buddha's wealth. This article attempts to make a more comprehensive exposition of this according to the Buddhist scriptures and the rationale.

Murder and retribution: Of the ten kinds of bad karma, killing and evil view are the most guilty. As the scripture says, "There is no more sin than killing life, and the evil in the ten evils is the most serious." The "Abstaining from Killing and Releasing Life" says, "The most important life in the world, and the most miserable one in the world, is killed." According to the Buddhist scripture, Huazhi Rinpoche said, "If you kill a sentient person, you need to pay 500 lives." So whether you kill a large or small sentient person, you must pay back 500 lives. Please those who kill seriously, think about how many of your precious lives you need to pay back in the afterlife, If so, are you willing to kill? In the Sutra of the Right Dharma, it is said: "If you kill someone with love, you will be robbed in hell." If so, you should think about how many thousands of years a person has been robbed. When can he be freed?! Master Lianchi said, "This is a terrible evil, and it will lead to eternal hatred. Once impermanence happens, it will fall into hell. When you are suffering, you will still be a beast. When you are wronged, you will have to pay back your life, and you will be a man. You will be sick and short-lived, or you will be killed by snakes and tigers, or you will be killed by swordsmen, or you will be punished by officials, or you will be killed by poison."

If we kill any sentient beings, we will become such sentient beings after we die, and we will suffer the same disaster. The Shurangama Sutra says: "People eat sheep, people die for sheep, and sheep die for people, such as ten lives and so on, death for life, and eat each other, evil karma for all, and poor future... so, through hundreds of thousands of calamities, often in life and death." There is an official case in the Baoji Sutra: once upon a time, there was a rich man who wanted to eat mutton, but he was afraid of his son's objection, so he lied that his geomancy was good because of the tree god on the big tree near the field, so, We must kill sheep for God. His son believed it, built a small temple beside the tree, and killed sheep to feed the tree god. Before long, the rich man died, and fell into evil fun and became a sheep because of false talk and killing. The next year, when his son wanted to kill sheep to sacrifice to the gods, he just chose the sheep that his father had entrusted to him. The sheep bleated and refused to be led out when it died. When it was lying on the ground, an Arhat came outside the door to explain the cause of the previous life, and blessed the owner to see the process of his father's reincarnation into a sheep. At this time, his son was very regretful, so he destroyed the temple. From then on, he broke the evil and did good, never killed, never released, and respected the Three Treasures, believing in cause and effect.

There is also a story in the Sutra of Buddha. When Mughalian and Desheng Picchu went to the seaside, they saw a man burning with flames and crying loudly. There were countless hungry ghosts holding fire bows and arrows around him and shooting at him. Muqianlian observed the cause with divine powers. He was a hunter in his previous life and killed a lot of people. So he suffered for many years during his life and fell to hell after his death. It was difficult to escape.

There is another story in the rest of the scriptures. In the past, King Piluzega of Shewei led the army to the Sakya settlement and killed 80000 Sakya people. At that time, the Buddha looked at the cause of the death of the fish as a fisherman for the Sakya people in the past. The king of Pilushega and his ministers were reborn for the reincarnation of the two great fish at that time.

Therefore, although we can't see the past and future generations with our naked eyes, our evil karma for killing lives always follows. Once the karma is mature, it will show its results. If we have the divine power of the heavenly eye, we will pay attention to the choice of cause and effect. The Classic of All Kinds of Deeds says, "All kinds of affectionate deeds will not perish after a hundred calamities, and the fate will be ripe when the time comes." Both the Sutra of All Kinds of Deeds and Vinaya say, "All kinds of deeds will not perish after a hundred calamities." The Sutra of Merit and Virtue, written by Zhi Beiguang, says, "The golden winged bird in the sky will fly high, although it can't be seen, just like all kinds of affectionate deeds, the fate will appear when the time comes." The meaning of this is: For example, when the golden winged bird flies high in the sky, we can't see its figure, but at this time, It is not without a shadow. As long as we follow it all the time, once the bird falls, we can see its shadow clearly; In the same way, the evil karma we kill or the good karma we release can't be seen now, but it will not be bad at all. When the karma is mature, it will show its results.

All animals in the world are actually afraid of death, just like people. For example, "When Shizun was king in the past, his family members prayed for rain due to drought in the fields, and killed their lives and offered sacrifices to the gods. At this time, the king was merciful and tried to stop it. But the cloud said: Zhanzhou was dry in the sky and dry in the ground, and the rest of the offerings were powerless. We should kill thousands of people from our family members to offer sacrifices to the gods. At that time, all the subjects were afraid to pray, so as not to kill the offerings to the gods. The king said: You are the same as the rest of the people, and know that you love yourself." Some stupid people, Seeing the fear of death of the cattle and other animals to be killed, he did not sympathize with them, but became angry and had to kill them. He would go to hell after death.      《华严经》云:诸恶莫作,众善奉行,自净其意,是诸佛教。世界上的一切动物,实际上都是好生怕死,与人一样......

   吾等大师释迦牟尼佛的佛教可归纳为三点:不造伤害众生之恶业、奉行身口意善业、经常善于调伏自心烦恼,这就是真正的佛法。《华严经》云:“诸恶莫作,众善奉行,自净其意,是诸佛教。”是故,皈依佛门的人,不应重视于是否拥有皈依证等这样的假名,而应以利益有情的善心为主。在时时刻刻之中,自己力所能及地饶益那些可怜的众生,这才是大乘菩萨的殊胜行为,已经发菩提心的人都不可缺少。因为释尊所说八万四千法门的精华是菩提心,菩提心的本体也就是直接或间接利益众生的心,是故仅发救护众生的心也超越世间有为法的一切功德,如寂天菩萨云:“仅唯发起饶益心,犹胜供养诸如来。”
  而一切众生最所珍护的也就是其生命,从死亡线上把它拯救出来,是对它最大的恩德,无情中断其生命是对它最大的迫害,戒杀放生是大乘菩萨本份中的事,也是圆满成佛资粮的最大方便。本文试图根据佛经论典以及理证,对此作一较全面的阐述。

  杀生报应:在十种不善业中,杀生和邪见的罪过最大。如经云:“杀生之上无余罪,十不善中邪见重。”《戒杀放生文》云:“世间至重者生命,天下最惨者杀伤。”华智仁波切根据佛经而云:“若杀一有情,需偿五百生。”故无论杀庞大众生或是渺小众生,自己必须偿还五百次生命,恭请杀业严重的人,想想你在来世需要偿还多少个自己的宝贵生命,如是你还愿意杀生吗?在《正法念处经》中说:“设使杀害一有情,一中劫住于地狱。”如是则当思维,一中劫有多少万年,此人何时方能解脱?!莲池大师云:“造此弥天恶业,结成万世深仇。一旦无常,即堕地狱。镬汤炉炭,剑树刀山,受罪毕时,仍作畜类。冤冤对报,命命填还,还毕为人,多病短命,或死蛇虎,或死刀兵,或死官刑,或死毒药,皆杀生所感也。”
  我们杀任何一个众生,自己死后即变成这类的众生,而会遭受到同样的厄难。《楞严经》云:“以人食羊,人死为羊,羊死为人,如是乃至十生之类,死死生生,互来相啖,恶业俱生,穷未来际……,以是因缘,经百千劫,常在生死。”在《宝积经》中有一公案:从前有一个富翁,他想吃羊肉,但又怕儿子反对,就打妄语说他家的风水好,是由于田边大树上的树神保佑,因此,必须杀羊供神。其儿子信以为真,在树旁建一座小庙,并杀羊供养树神。不久那富翁死了,因说妄语和杀生报应,堕入恶趣成羊。第二年儿子又要杀羊祭神时,恰好选中了其父托生的那只羊。此羊咩咩叫着,死也不肯被牵出去,正伏在地上时,门外来一罗汉,说明前世因缘,并加持主人也能看见其父转生为羊的经过。此时,儿子十分懊悔,就摧毁神庙,从此断恶行善,永不杀生,恒作放生,并礼敬三宝,深信因果。
  又佛经中有一故事,曾经目犍连和德生比丘至海边时,见一人全身炽燃火焰,口出大哭声,周围有无数饿鬼执持燃火之弓箭,向他射刺。目犍连以神通观察因缘,此人前生曾为一猎人,杀生极多,故其生时多年受苦,死后即堕地狱,难以解脱。
  其余经中有另一故事,昔日舍卫国毗卢择迦王率领军队,至释迦族聚落,杀害八万释迦族人。彼时,佛观其因缘,为往昔释迦族人当鱼夫杀害鱼类的果报,毗卢择迦王和其大臣为当时二大鱼的转世投生。
  所以,虽然我们的肉眼看不见前世和后世,但自己杀生的恶业恒时跟随着,一旦因缘成熟时则会现前其果报,若得天眼神通,则定会注意取舍因果。《百业经》云:“有情之诸业,百劫不坏灭,缘合应时际,其果定成熟。”诸契经和毗奈耶皆云:“诸业纵百劫不亡”,智悲光的《功德藏论》云:“空中金翅鸟高翔,虽不现见其身影,如同有情之诸业,缘会时临定显现。”如是所说的意义是:譬如金翅鸟飞翔高空时,我们虽不能现见其身影,但此时,并非无身影,只要我们一直跟随,一旦鸟身下落时就能明见其黑影;同样,我们杀生的恶业或放生的善业,现在虽然不能现见,但却终不会失坏,何时因缘成熟时便会现前其果报。
 世界上的一切动物,实际上都是好生怕死,与人一样。如《功德藏释》云:“往昔释尊当国王时,其眷属因田旱祈雨,而杀生供神,此时,国王生悲愍,设法阻止,而云:瞻洲天旱地干,余供无力,当从吾眷属之中,宰杀千人,供神求雨。尔时,诸所有臣民,恐惧祈祷,免杀供神。时王曰:汝与余众,本皆相同,悉爱自命。”有些愚笨的人,见到正待遭杀的牛等牲畜恐怖抵拒而怕死的情状,不但不加以同情怜悯,反而大发愤怒,非去宰杀不可,此人死后定即堕地狱。(网文)
