Career planning: life planning is important
Life planning is very important. What is your life plan?
----- Zhuge Changqing
Life needs planning.
A career needs even more careful planning.
You have to think, how do you spend your life?
The China Entrepreneur Network, featuring the story of Yang Lan who achieved success through life planning.
Yang Lan, a famous senior TV presenter in China. She has worked as a TV host in a powerful and influential TV station in China, and is loved by the TV audience for her very affable hosting style.
She has been selected as one of the "Top 20 Social and Cultural Leaders in Asia", one of the "Top 12 People who can move China forward and reshape its image", and one of the "People of the Times". She has been selected as one of the "Twenty Social and Cultural Leaders in Asia", one of the "Twelve People who can move China forward and reshape its image", and one of the "Chinese Women of the Times".
According to Zhuge Changqing, Yang Lan's success is based on three factors: firstly, she dares to think and act, secondly, she seizes opportunities, and thirdly, she avoids her shortcomings. Yang Lan pays great attention to making her own life plan, which is very important. The China Entrepreneur Network, a special report on Yang Lan's success story.
First transition: CCTV programme host
Zhuge Changqing: Yang Lan's first success factor was: she dared to think and act, and ran towards her goal.
Before becoming a CCTV presenter, Yang Lan was a university student at the Beijing Foreign Language Institute, a girl who lacked self-confidence and was even frustrated by her inability to understand listening lessons. It was only when her listening skills improved that she gradually regained her confidence. She says, "I often felt that I was not a talented and extremely intelligent person." But all this did not affect Yang Lan's subsequent success. A hard worker, she is not only bold and outspoken, but also usually has her own unique perspective on issues.
In February 1990, CCTV's "Zhengda Variety" programme advertised for hosts nationwide. Yang Lan gradually stood out for her natural and fresh style, her calm and generous stage presence and her outstanding talent. However, as she was not too good-looking, she was only "considered" for the sixth audition. When Yang Lan found out about this, she asked the director, "Why do you have to find only one female presenter, is she just a sidekick to the male ones? In fact, women can also be very intelligent, so if I could have this opportunity, I would like to be a smart presenter myself." "I'm not very pretty, but I'm classy." It was because of these words that Yang Lan completely impressed the director. After graduation, Yang Lan officially became the host of the show "Zhengda Variety". Until now, Yang Lan has always insisted that a presenter does not have to be pretty, but a woman's mind is more important.
Her four-year career as a CCTV presenter not only broadened her horizons, but also established her future direction: to be a real media personality.
Second transition: American student
Zhuge Changqing: Yang Lan's second success factor was to seize the opportunity and move forward.
In 1994, while still marvelling at her achievements as a presenter, Yang Lan made another surprising decision: she quit her job at CCTV and went to study in the USA.
Choosing to retreat at the brightest moment of her career meant giving up everything she currently had, including a promising future within her reach. But Mr Xie Guoming, the president of the Zhengda Group, who sponsored her study abroad, said this, "I don't think a show is as important as a person." This left a deep impression on Yang Lan.
At the age of 26, Yang Lan went to Columbia University in the United States to study international media. Once, Yang Lan wrote her dissertation until two o'clock in the middle of the night, and when she finished it, she didn't have time to save it, but her computer crashed. Yang Lan cried, thinking that she would not be able to hand in her paper the next day. It was very quiet around the dormitory, except for the sound of her own crying, and only the rats crawling around in the dormitory pipes. But in the end, she dried her tears and finished her thesis. Talking about this period of her life, Yang Lan said, "Some people may encounter more hardships than others, but I have encountered no less difficulties than others, because nothing is easy and there is no shortage of trials and tribulations to go through".
In her spare time, she co-produced Yang Lan View, a programme on American politics, economics, society and culture, with Shanghai Oriental Television, the first time Yang Lan looked at the world from an independent perspective. The 40-episode series was distributed to 52 provincial and municipal TV stations in China, enabling her to make the transition from being an entertainment presenter to a media professional.
More importantly, it was during this period that she met her husband, Wu Zheng. As a partner in her career and in life, Wu Zheng was instrumental in helping her expand her network and career space. He always encouraged Yang Lan to try new things: it is better to fail in trying than to succeed in being conservative! It was Wu Zheng's help that helped Yang Lan's future path get wider and wider.
The third transition: Phoenix TV host
Zhuge Changqing: Yang Lan's third element of success is to build on her strengths and avoid her weaknesses, and to be flexible.
After returning to China in 1997, Yang Lan began to look for opportunities that would suit her. In January 1998, "Yang Lan's Studio" was launched.
The two years at Phoenix TV played an important role in Yang Lan's career development. She not only gained experience and capital in various areas, but also reserved space for her future development.
At Phoenix, Yang Lan is not only a presenter, but also the head of Yang Lan's Studio, making her own selections, taking care of her own budgets, and having to be meticulous with all the food and oil in the group. This financial constraint was a great exercise for Yang Lan to know how to get the show done to the best of her ability with minimal funding.
Over the next two years, Yang Lan interviewed over 120 celebrities. These heavyweights also formed part of Yang Lan's future career development, and many of them remained in close contact with her even after the show. In addition to the concrete help that these contacts provide, the spiritual benefits cannot be ignored. At the same time, interacting with guests from different industries and backgrounds has also enriched her with a wealth of information.
Two years later, Yang Lan has undergone a qualitative change. With her world-class reputation, years of experience in the media, and heavyweight celebrity connections, it was clear that all she needed to enter the business world was capital. Wu Zheng, however, is a master of capital management.
The fourth transition: the head of Sunshine TV
Zhuge Changqing: Yang Lan's third success factor was to build on her strengths and avoid her weaknesses, and to be flexible.
In October 1999, Yang Lan quit her job at Phoenix TV. After quitting Phoenix TV, Yang Lan was quiet for a while, but in March 2000, she suddenly acquired the Liangji Group, renamed Sunshine Culture Network TV Holdings Limited, and successfully listed it on the stock exchange, ready to build a media empire of Sunshine Culture.
Unlike most businessmen who keep a low profile, Yang Lan chose to always stand in front of Sunshine TV. Reports about Yang Lan can often be found on newspaper and magazine websites. She has gone from being a media professional to a media celebrity. This ease of use of media resources gave her Sun TV many advantages right from birth.
However, soon after Yang Lan started her business, she encountered the global economic downturn and immediately felt the pressure. She thought about the running of the company almost every day. Due to the pressure of market competition, Yang Lan sharply cut the company's costs by almost half and gradually divested the heavily loss-making satellite TV and Hong Kong newspaper publishing businesses, while she also cut her salary by 40 per cent.
In the summer of 2001, Yang Lan was the 'ambassador' for Beijing's Olympic bid in Moscow. In the same year, her company "Sunshine Culture" took over Sina.com, one of China's largest web portals, ushering in an era of combining the internet and television. She also set up "YangGuang SiTong" in cooperation with SiTong and began to enter the network industry and IT industry.
All this has brought confidence to all staff of the company. Finally, Sunshine Culture made a profit in the 2003 financial year ending 31 March 2004, shaking off nearly two years of losses. Afterwards, Sunshine Culture officially changed its name to Sunshine Sports and Yang Lan announced her resignation as Chairman of the Board at the same time to devote herself to the production of cultural television programmes.
Zhuge Changqing: In the course of your life, you should think hard about what your life plan is. Life planning is very important.
