New thinking at Shandong University: opening a new square with a new entrance山东大学新思维:启用新校门新广场
A great scholar is a place where the country's great talents are nurtured. It must be a place of beautiful mountains and profound culture. May the name of Shanda be known throughout the world.

On the morning of October 7, the inauguration ceremony of the new gate and Dacheng Square of Shandong University Central Campus was held.
The new gate of Shandong University Central Campus is located on the central axis of the campus on the south side of the South Square of the Central Campus, which is the main gate of the Central Campus.
Shandong University was founded in 1901 as Shandong University Hall in the 27th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. Shandong University is a famous university with a long history in China. It is a comprehensive university with a wide range of academic disciplines, strong academic strength and distinctive features, and is one of the first universities to enter the "211 Project" and "985 Project". Over the past 100 years, this prestigious university has gone through the historical development periods of Shandong University Hall, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University and Shandong University, and has become an important birthplace of modern university education and a major town of culture, science and education in China.
At the inauguration ceremony of the new gate of Shanda University, President Xu Xianming said that any good university is made up of a number of stories, and the story of a good university starts from the gate.
Xu Xianming said that the gate of Harvard University is ironwork, and on its right gate, it says "Come for the pursuit of truth", and on its left gate, it says "Go for the contribution to your country". That's the story of Harvard.
"There is a legend at Princeton University, and no one dares to break the spell: students who enter Princeton must go right. In the 260 years of Princeton's history, no student has ever graduated by going through the wrong door; if you go through the wrong door, you will not graduate. This is called the Princeton mantra, so you have to enter the university formally, honestly, and only after you have finished your studies inside are you qualified to come out in a big way, and this is the story of Princeton." Xu Xianming said.
"Oxford University, the most rigorous university in the world. But when you can't graduate and your defence is not passed, you can no longer come out the same door you went in, you have to come out the back door, so the back door of Oxford is considered a ghost door and the street next to the back door is called Ghost Street. So this also tells you that the doors of the university are not just a place to enter." Xu Xianming also told the group.
"So the door of a good university, at the beginning, carries something." Xu Xianming introduced, Shanda Baotu campus beautiful door carries a lot of stories, called the "alumni door", is the alumni of Qilu University in the 1920s donated to the alma mater, so the door from the completion of several destroyed, but still maintain its original appearance. It has not been altered. The three words "Alumni Gate" were written by a famous artist, Wang Shoupeng, who inscribed them for Qilu University, which today is part of Shandong University, fitting in with this history.
The new gate takes the form of a colonnade connected to the main and secondary towers, symmetrical on the central axis, forming a pair of solid and spreading arms in the shape of an 'embrace', forming a circular square at the southern entrance, signifying Shandong University's simplicity and generosity, its broad-mindedness and its ability to attract talent from all directions.
Zhuge Changqing: Shandong University has a new mindset, an omen that a new leap may be in the offing.
The form of the tower echoes the main building of the campus, the Zhixin Building, and some of the elements of the Zhixin Building are applied to the design to make the overall style of the campus harmonious and unified. Some cultural symbols are added to the details to highlight the cultural atmosphere of the campus. The height of the two main towers is 11 metres, echoing the theme of the 110th anniversary of the founding of Shandong University, leaving a testimony to this historic moment for Shandong University.
Dacheng Square is the central square of the central campus of Shandong University and is an important place for culture, ritual and recreation. The newly constructed Dacheng Square takes the core of Confucianism, ritual and music, as the guidelines and elements of the square's landscape reconstruction, strengthening the axis and sequence, reflecting the traditional cultural temperament of the unity of heaven and man and the heavy Lu culture.
The name of the square, Dacheng, means "to gather the greatness of all schools", implying the idea of inclusive schooling and the mission of passing on the wisdom of traditional Chinese culture and promoting Chinese traditional culture.
On the south side of the square, behind the school gate, is a school rules stone, engraved in 'Shanda red' on the front with the mission statement 'to store talents for the world and to make the country rich and strong', and on the back with the gilt 'Provisional Statutes of the University Hall of Shandong Province (excerpt)'. Directly to the north of the school rules stone are the ground carvings of the "University" chapter and the central fountain. A water system runs through Dacheng Square from the school rule stone to the flagstaff platform in the north. On both sides of the water system are neatly arranged columns of jade sceptre lampposts.
Zhuge Changqing: You must have great ambition to do your career. The mission of Shandong University, "to store talents for the world and to make the country rich and strong", augurs well for the emergence of elite talents who will shake the country.
"The jade sceptre is one of the most important ceremonial vessels in ancient China, and the Rites of the Zhou have the saying that "the celestial rituals of the sky and the earthly rituals of the yellow suzerainty. music", "benevolence", "harmony", "calligraphy", "mathematics" The eight square bronze sculptures of "ritual", "music", "benevolence", "harmony", "calligraphy", "mathematics" and "imperial" are arranged around the water system, representing the traditional Confucian culture. The design of the water system reflects the cultural taste and philosophy of Shanda University, showing the historical lineage and humanistic connotation of the century-old university. On October 7, the new gate and Dacheng Square of Shandong University Central Campus was officially opened. The university gate is the window of the university to the outside world, and is also the concrete embodiment of the university's philosophy. As the "leading" university in Shandong Province, every move of Shandong University is the focus of attention from all walks of life. The replacement of the university gate is no exception. After the retirement of the 21-year-old "Shan" gate, the new gate of the central campus of Shandong University was presented in front of the world with its symbolic image.
The towers are linked by a curved corridor, signifying the acceptance of students from all directions
The reporter saw yesterday at the scene, the new campus of Shanda Central Campus as a whole is arc-shaped, the main and secondary tower structure, the overall use of the main and secondary towers linked arc-shaped corridor, and in the form of a central axis of symmetry to show a pair of spreading wings. "It's better than expected, quite atmospheric." A third-year student of Shanda University, Nei Yilong, told reporters that the new school gate gives a modern visual effect and is a new starting point for the school.
Wang Chongjie, president of Shandong University of Architecture and a representative of the new gate designer, said that the new gate of Shandong University Central Campus highlights the university's philosophy of being open to all rivers and rivers, symbolising openness to society and facing the community. The circular square on the south side of the campus is a symbol of the university's openness to students from all directions. The construction of the campus gate and the classic elements of the main building, Zhixin Building, are intertwined to form a 'mountain' shape.
Dacheng Square is a symbol of "integration", and every landscape has its own meaning
The newly completed Dacheng Square is designed to be a place of 'great success'. Every landscape in the square is significant.
Xu Xianming, President of Shanda University, said that the first building after entering the campus is the square, and two thematic squares are being built on the central campus, with Confucianism as the core, to build Dacheng Square. "This square means that we should learn from the sages, and when we enter Shandong University, we should become a person who is on a par with the sages after bathing in the culture of this square. (Zhuge Changqing) Note: Xu Xianming, male, born in April 1957, is a Han Chinese, native of Laixi City, Shandong Province. He received his doctorate in law from Wuhan University in 1999 and has been the president of China University of Political Science and Law since September 2001, and the president of Shandong University since November 2008.)
On the south side of the square, behind the university gate, is a school rule stone, engraved in "Shanda red" on the front with the motto "To store talents for the world and to make the country rich and strong". On the back is engraved in gilt the Provisional Statutes of the University Hall of Shandong Province (excerpt). Directly to the north of the school rules stone are the ground carvings of the University and the central fountain. A water system runs through Dacheng Square from the school rules stone to the flagstaff platform in the north. On both sides of the water system are neatly arranged columns of jade congregation lampposts. The eight pieces are engraved with the words "ritual", "music", "benevolence", "harmony", and "harmony". The eight pieces are engraved with the words "ritual", "music", "ren", "harmony", "book", "number", "archery" and "imperial". "The square bronze floor sculptures are arranged around the water system, representing traditional Confucian culture.
Yin Weilun, academician of Beijing Forestry University and representative of the design unit of Dacheng Square, said that the design of the square integrates the best parts of Shanda's 110-year history. One of the round Peiyong was previously only available in Beijing's Guozijian, and only half walls were available elsewhere. "Shandong University, as a renowned institution of learning in the hometown of Confucius, naturally has the right to use the round Peiyong, which is supreme." And there is much to be said for the square pulpit, on which a column of water spurts highest in the middle of the fountain, surrounded by clusters of smaller fountains. When the fountain spurts, the surrounding water pillars cluster around the highest one in the middle, like a water statue of Confucius, and the clustered smaller fountains are a robe, which also contains the idea of an east-west, north-south ritual.
"In the future there will also be a jade sculpture in the middle, surrounded by elements in the four directions of east, west, north and south, which represent the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter." Yin Weilun said that the water in the waterway flows northwards towards the source of the fountain, creating an undulation that implies the sacrifice to the north
