Why is July of the lunar calendar called "Ghost Month" or "Ghost Day"?

After a thorough study of China's traditional culture, Zhuge Changqing found that people call the seventh month of the lunar calendar "Ghost Month" and "Ghost Day" because the seventh month of the lunar calendar is a holiday for the ghosts of hell.

Zhuge Changqing deeply studied traditional culture and found that the holiday of ghosts in July of the lunar calendar has a historical origin.

It turned out that the merciful Fengdu Emperor and the Ten Hall Yan Lord of Hell, who pitied the ghosts of hell, decided to give the ghosts of the civilian areas of hell a month's rest and vacation.

The Great Emperor of Fengdu and the Lord Yan of the Tenth Hall held a meeting to study and decided to set the lunar July as the holiday month for the ghosts of Hell, giving them a month to relax in the sun, enjoy the relief of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, enjoy the offerings of the world, and feel some of the human family. This practice has received the care and support of Sakyamuni Buddha, the Jade Emperor, the Supreme Lord and other Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and good gods.

As a result, there have been Buddhist Bon Festival, Happy Day, etc., Taoist Festival (Ghost Festival), Confucian Ghost Festival, ancestor worship and other activities.

In the seventh month of the lunar calendar, especially on the fifteenth day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the compassionate Buddhist monk Dade at home, the Taoist Taoist monk Dade at home, the Confucian filial piety, sages and benevolent people will hold some traditional cultural activities, such as transcending Dharma meetings, sacrificing Dharma meetings, and sacrificing ancestors.

Zhuge Changqing believed that since Fuxi and Nuwa founded the Chinese nation, sacrificing ancestors and ghosts and gods has been an important part of our traditional Chinese culture. The holding of Dharma meetings and offerings in the seventh month of the lunar calendar is also the traditional way for our Chinese nation to sacrifice and provide for our ancestors, which should be carefully inherited. Today, Japan, South Korea and various countries in Southeast Asia learn from China in their activities of sacrificing ancestors and ghosts and gods.

Here, we would like to thank the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, the good gods, the king of Tibet, the Great Emperor Fengdu of Hell and the King of Ten Halls of Hell for their compassion, as well as the selfless contributions of all levels of ghosts in Hell, as well as the selfless contributions of the ancient and modern immeasurable eminent monks and great virtues, the living at home, and the great virtues of Taoists.

In recent days, some predestined people have left messages to Zhuge Changqing in different ways to ask how to provide for ghosts by giving food, offering cigarettes, offering fire, burning paper money, etc. on the July Ghost Festival.

Zhuge Changqing wrote this article "July Ghost Festival: How to give cigarettes to burn paper money to feed ghosts" to give a unified answer and share the fate.

1、 How to give food, smoke and fire during the Ghost Festival in July?

1. Those who can give food and smoke can directly call for help.

Zhuge Changqing believes that those who are destined to give food and smoke can join in the invitation:

Call - all sentient beings, abortions, ghosts, ghosts, ghosts, ghosts, kings, ghosts and goblins who need to transcend and take part in the alms and offerings ī  mèi w ǎ ng li ǎ Ng-like sentient beings participate in giving food (fire and smoke);

Go back - finally, go back to them "to get happiness from suffering and to live beyond life at once".

2. Those who can make a fire offering can add colored cloth strips to the fire offering food in addition to calling for return.

We do this because those colorful cloth strips can become the clothes of those ghosts.

2、 How do you worship your ancestors on July Ghost Festival?

Zhuge Changqing suggested three points:

1. You can burn paper money, put fruit cakes and other offerings on the tomb to offer sacrifices to the deceased relatives; This can be done in combination with local folk customs.

2. You can set up an offering table at home, put fruit, cakes and other offerings, and invite your ancestors to enjoy them. This should be carried out in combination with personal actual conditions.

3. You can go to clean places such as the nearby undisturbed crossroads and the suburbs, burn paper money, gold ingots, and place fruit cakes to worship the ancestors and ghosts of Leishizong.

3、 How to burn paper money and gold coins to support ancestors and nearby ghosts?

Here, I will ask Zhuge Changqing how to burn paper money and gold coins to support his ancestors and near ghosts.

The predestined person "does good" said: Teacher Zhuge Changqing, July of the lunar calendar is the ghost month. My sister bought some gold foil and paper clothes. She wants to give alms to the ghosts on the Mid-Autumn Festival (July 15 of the lunar calendar). Which ritual should she use? How to make it successful?

Zhuge Changqing explained the method of burning paper money to support ancestors and nearby ghosts on the July Ghost Festival in combination with the actual situation:

Your sister felt that it was very good to burn gold foil, paper clothes and other alms to provide for all living beings in the ghost world during the Yuan Festival. Good intentions, good thoughts and good deeds must be rewarded. The suggestions are as follows:

（1） Prepare items.

Zhuge Changqing suggested that you prepare more combustibles and offerings, such as:

1. Gold ingots, paper clothes, paper money, incense;

2. Fruit, cake, candy, biscuit, water (disposable water cup), etc.

3. Prepare matches and lighters.

This is a larger quantity.

（2） Preparation location:

Zhuge Changqing suggests that you choose an undisturbed, clean and quiet intersection or suburb.

1. Put fruits, cakes, biscuits, disposable cups, etc. in place;

2. Then pile paper money, gold coins, clothes and incense together.

（3） Worship of ghosts and gods

1. Tell me who you are before lighting.

Zhuge Changqing believes that you can quickly get the blessing of Buddha, Bodhisattva and God, get more blessings, and accelerate the elimination of karma.

(1) "Make a sound" chant Buddha's horn and Taoist sign, and ask for blessings.

The first voice reads "Nanwu Bodhisattva Sakyamuni, Nanwu Amitabha, Nanwu Avalokitesvara, Nanwu Tibetan King Bodhisattva, Supreme Lord, Taiyi Saves the Bitter Heavenly Buddha, Fengdu Great Emperor, and Shidian Yan Lord" 20 times each.

(2) "Silent" introduced himself, saying who you are and where you support:

(2) Then he said to the Void: I have prepared some paper money, gold ingots, clothes, incense, fruit cakes, etc. today to provide for my ancestors, ancestors and ghosts who need to be provided nearby. If necessary, I can come to collect them (say three times).

3. While igniting the paper money, gold and silver coins, he repeated the call---

Disciples prepared some paper money, gold ingots, clothes, incense, fruit cakes, etc. today to support my ancestors, ancestors and ghosts who need to be provided nearby. If you need to, you can come to collect them (repeat)

4. Leave at the end of the fire. Put your hands together and say:

My relatives, ancestors and ghosts for many generations are waiting for you: please enjoy it. At the same time, I will recite the merits of "Nanwu Bodhisattva, Nanwu Amitabha, Nanwu Avalokitesvara, Nanwu Tibetan King Bodhisattva, Taishang Laojun, Taiyi Saving the Bitter Heavenly Buddha, Fengdu Great Emperor, and Shidian Yan Lord" to you as soon as possible. thank you.

5. After that, don't look back, just leave and return.

   农历七月，又被称为鬼月、鬼节。

   为什么每年农历七月被称为“鬼月”、“鬼节”呢？

   深入研究我国传统文化，诸葛长青发现，人们把农历的七月称为“鬼月”“鬼节”，是因为农历七月是地狱鬼魂放假，休假一个月的时间。

   诸葛长青深入研究传统文化，发现农历七月鬼魂放假，有一个历史渊源。

   原来，慈悲的地狱的酆都大帝、十殿阎王爷，他们怜悯地狱鬼魂众生，决定给地狱平民区的鬼魂休息度假一个月。

   酆都大帝、十殿阎王爷召开会议研究，决定把每年的农历七月定为地狱鬼魂休假月，给他们一个月的时间，让他们到阳间放松心情，享受一下佛教、道教、儒教的救济度化，享受一下人间的供养，感受一些人间的亲情。这一做法得到释迦牟尼佛、玉皇大帝、太上老君等诸佛菩萨、诸位善神的关心和支持。

   因而也就陆续有了佛家的盂兰盆节、欢喜日等，有了道家的中元节（鬼节）等，有了儒家的鬼节、祭祀祖先等活动。

   农历七月，尤其是农历七月十五，慈悲的佛家高僧大德在家居士、道家道士大德在家居士、儒家孝子贤孙仁者居士等，会在举办一些超度法会、供养法会、祭祀供奉祖先等传统文化活动。

   诸葛长青认为，自从伏羲、女娲开创中华民族以来，祭祀祖先、供养鬼神等，就是我们中华传统文化的重要组成部分。而在农历七月举行法会、供养等，也是我们中华民族传统祭祀祖先、供养祖先的方式，应当认真传承。今天，日本、韩国以及东南亚各个国家的祭祀祖先、供养鬼神等活动多是从中国学习去的。

   这里，我们要感谢诸佛菩萨、诸位善神、地藏王菩萨、地狱酆都大帝和十殿阎罗王的慈悲心，以及感谢地狱各级鬼差的无私奉献，感谢古今无量高僧大德、在家居士、道士大德等的无私供养。

    近一段时间，一些有缘者通过不同方式给诸葛长青留言提问，七月鬼节，如何通过施食、烟供、火供、烧纸钱等供养鬼魂。

   诸葛长青写出这篇《七月鬼节：如何施食烟供烧纸钱供养鬼魂》进行统一解答，分享有缘者。

   一、七月鬼节如何施食、烟供、火供？

   1、会做施食、烟供的，可以直接召请回向。

   诸葛长青认为，会做施食、烟供的有缘者，召请的时候，可以加入：

   召请---尽虚空遍法界需要超度、需要参加施食供养的各位有缘众生、堕胎婴灵、孤魂野鬼、鬼魂众生、鬼类、鬼王类、魑魅魍魉（chī mèi wǎng liǎng）类众生参加施食（火供、烟供）；

   回向----最后，回向他们“离苦得乐、立刻超生”就可以。

    2、会做火供的，除了召请回向之外，可以火供食物中加入彩色布条。

   大家这样做，是因为那些彩色布条，可以成为那些鬼魂的衣服。

    二、七月鬼节如何供奉自己祖先？

    诸葛长青建议三点：

   1、可以到坟墓上烧纸钱、摆水果糕点等供品祭祀供养去世宗亲；这个结合当地民俗进行就可以。

   2、可以在家里设立供桌，摆水果、糕点等供品，请自己累世宗亲、历代祖先享用。这个结合个人实际情况进行。

   3、可以到附近无人干扰的十字路口、郊区野外等干净地方，烧纸钱金元宝、摆水果糕点等供奉累世宗亲历代祖先、附近的鬼魂。

   三、如何烧纸钱、金元宝等供养祖先和附近鬼魂？

   这里结合一位有缘者“行善”给诸葛长青提问说一说，如何燃烧纸钱、金元宝等供养自己祖先、近鬼魂。

   有缘者“行善”说：诸葛长青老师，农历七月是鬼月，我妹妹买了一些金箔和纸衣服，想在中元节（农历七月十五日）布施给鬼道众生，该用哪个仪轨呢？如何做会圆满？

   诸葛长青结合实际讲解七月鬼节烧纸钱供养祖先和附近鬼魂方法：

   阿弥陀佛。福生无量天尊。太上老君。你妹妹发心中元节燃烧金箔、纸衣服等布施供养给鬼道众生，非常好，有善心善念善行，必有福报。建议如下：

  （一）准备物品。

   诸葛长青建议你多准备一些燃烧物品和供品，譬如：

   1、金元宝、纸衣服、纸钱、香；

   2、水果、糕点、糖块、饼干、水（可以一次性水杯）等。

   3、准备好火柴、打火机。

   这样量大一些。

   （二）准备地点：

   诸葛长青建议你选择无人干扰、干净清静的十字路口或者郊区进行。

   1、把水果、糕点、饼干、一次性水杯等摆好；

   2、然后把纸钱、金元宝、衣服、香火堆到一起。

   （三）供养鬼神仪轨

   1、点燃之前说说你是谁。

   诸葛长青认为，你这样做可以迅速得到佛菩萨善神加持，可以得到更多福报果报，可以加速消除业障。

  （1）“出声音”念佛号、道号，请求加持护佑。

   先出声音念“南无本师释迦牟尼佛、南无阿弥陀佛、南无观世音菩萨、南无地藏王菩萨、太上老君、太乙救苦天尊、酆都大帝、十殿阎王爷”各20遍。

   (2)“默念”自我介绍，说你是谁，你在哪里供养：

   弟子***，年月日出生在*南赡部洲中国**省**市***，现在*南赡部洲中国**省**市***居住，今天我用金元宝、纸钱、衣服、水果糕点等来供养我的累世宗亲、历代祖先，和需要救助的鬼魂，请加持护佑（默念三遍）。

   2、“出声音”召请需要接受供养的鬼魂

  （1）念诵“南无本师释迦牟尼佛、南无阿弥陀佛、南无观世音菩萨、南无地藏王菩萨、太上老君、太乙救苦天尊、酆都大帝、十殿阎王爷”各3遍。

   （2）然后对着虚空说：弟子今天准备了一些纸钱、金元宝、衣服、香火、水果糕点等，用来供养我的累世宗亲、历代祖先以及附近需要供养的各位鬼魂，如果有需要的可以前来领取（连说3遍）。

   3、一边点燃纸钱金元宝等，一边重复说召请的话---

   弟子今天准备了一些纸钱、金元宝、衣服、香火、水果糕点等，用来供养我的累世宗亲、历代祖先以及附近需要供养的各位鬼魂，如果有需要的可以前来领取（重复说）......

   4、燃烧快要结束时候离开。双手合十，说：

   我的累世宗亲、历代祖先和各位鬼魂等你们好：请你们尽情享用，同时我把念诵“南无本师释迦牟尼佛、南无阿弥陀佛、南无观世音菩萨、南无地藏王菩萨、太上老君、太乙救苦天尊、酆都大帝、十殿阎王爷”的功德，回向你们早日离苦得乐立刻超生（3遍）。谢谢。

   5、说完后，不回头，直接离开返回。
