Master Xu Yun, a 120-year-old eminent monk: practice, promote Dharma, and give alms

120岁高僧虚云法师:修行、弘法、施食、

amitabha. Giving food is a Buddhist magic weapon to transcend life, accumulate blessings, and promote practice.

Blessed life is limitless.

Almsgiving brings great benefits and merits. The eminent monks and great virtues of all dynasties are the promoters of almsgiving.

Zhuge Changqing: Amitabha. A generation of eminent monk, Master Xu Yun, has always been feeding.

Master Xu Yun was born in 1840, with a life span of 120 years.

The chief initiator of the preparation of China's Buddhist institutions and was elected honorary president of the National Buddhist Association.

Together with Master Taixu, Master Hongyi and Master Yinguang, he is known as the four eminent monks in modern times, and is also known as the "master of Zen". He has made immortal contributions to the spread of Buddhism, bearing in mind the ancestral precept of "Buddhism is in the world and never leaves the world".

In the history of Chinese modern Buddhism, Master Xu Yun is a legendary eminent monk.

1、 Master Xu Yun is like a monk of the Tang Dynasty. He travels thousands of miles alone and studies Buddhism.

Zhuge Changqing believes that a generation of eminent monks has been achieved with firm faith and perseverance. Master Xu Yun is just like the monk of the Tang Dynasty. He has lofty ambitions. He never stops learning Buddhism, travels thousands of miles alone, and spreads Dharma all over the world. It is amazing.

Master Xu Yun's life has been extremely arduous and rich. Some people praised him as "ambitious and strong, compassionate and bitter", and more importantly, "his great and profound achievements, morality and enlightenment are rare in nearly a thousand years". The master left his family and left his wife in Xianfeng and landed in Gushan, Fuzhou.

During the reign of Guangxu, he knelt and worshipped the five platforms, one step at a time, lasting for three years.

Later, he went to India and the South Ocean, followed the example of Master Xuanzang, and traveled thousands of miles to worship the holy sites.

In the following decades, the five patriarchal lineages were selected to revive the Zen Sect, and six ancient temples, including Jizu Mountain Zhusheng Temple, Kunming Yunqi Temple, Gushan Yongquan Temple, Shaoguan South Temple, Yunmen Dajue Temple, and Yunju Zhenru Temple, were revived.

As a result, he has become a well-known Zen master and a generation of eminent monk. After the liberation, the venerable Master Xu Yun was an old man more than 100 years old. He went to Beijing to participate in the preparation of a national Buddhist organization, was elected as the chief sponsor, and was elected honorary president of the National Buddhist Association, and became a leader in the new era of Buddhism.

2、 Adhere to the principle of "Buddhism is in the world, and never leave the world" to promote Buddhism.

Zhuge Changqing: Amitabha. To promote Buddhism, we must approach the world. Without it, Buddhism cannot be spread. Don't forget that there are many bitter people in the world.

In terms of Buddhist thoughts, Master Xu Yun emphasized the significance of Buddhism in guiding the people, tending to the best, changing customs, and assisting the government and the people.

Even at the age of one hundred, he is still based on the protection of Buddhism and Buddhist monks, abides by the ancestral precept of "Buddhism is in the world, and never leaves the world", and tries to adapt to the new social environment and system.

3、 Abide by precepts and practice diligently. Practise discipline and wisdom, and put an end to greed, hatred and ignorance.

Zhuge Changqing: Amitabha. Master Xu Yun's "Diligent practice, discipline and wisdom, and eliminate greed, hatred and ignorance" reminds people to make progress at all times. Stick to the precepts, and there will be a leap forward.

The master also paid special attention to discipline, and practiced it all his life. In preaching or teaching, it is also repeatedly emphasized that precepts are the basis of Buddhism.

Even at the last moment of life, the last words to the waiter around him are still just one word - "Caution". He said: "Now ask me the last words, only 'practice discipline and wisdom diligently, and put an end to greed, hatred and ignorance'.".

The Master also advocated that the four disciples should keep practicing on the basis of "faith".

He warned the disciples and students that the Buddha is around, and constantly improving is to practice the Buddha.

As long as you have strong faith and a deep door, you can practice everywhere and there is an ashram everywhere. The so-called "carrying water and firewood, hoeing fields and planting, and even dressing and eating are all Buddhist practices". This is the "agriculture and Zen" that labor does not forget practice and practice does not forget labor.

4、 Advocate "Zen and Pure Cultivation" to achieve a leap.

Zhuge Changqing: Amitabha. Only by practicing both meditation and purification can we leap forward. Master Yinguang said, "There is Zen and there is pure land. It is like a tiger with horns. It is a teacher in this world and a Buddha in the next life".

The master said, "When you are calm, you should not work hard to keep the precepts, and when you are straight, you should use meditation! Although there are many ways to work hard, all the Buddhists regard meditation as the supreme and wonderful way. The so-called water and firewood transportation is nothing but a good way; hoeing the fields and planting the fields is always a good way. It is not a day of cross-legged meditation that counts as a hard way to work." The most admirable thing is that although the master is the great virtue of Zen, he will never reject other sects, and advocates that "Zen is pure". He pointed out: "People who recite Buddhism often slander meditation. People who practice Buddhism often slander Buddhism. It seems that they are enemies who want to die quickly. This is the most lamented evil phenomenon of Buddhism." His century-long promotion of Buddhism is not limited to Zen, but is to integrate all Dharma, demonstrate all principles, and uphold the concept of "Zen and Pure Cultivation". His unique understanding and profound understanding of Zen meditation, as well as the rich practice gained from it, made the master famous in the Zen forest.

5、 Continue to feed, promote the law and promote life.

Zhuge Changqing: Amitabha. Master Xu Yun continued to feed. In the process of traveling all over the world, we use alms to transcend immeasurable creatures, promote Dharma and benefit life, and achieve immeasurable merits.

Master Xu Yun has traveled all over the country and never stopped feeding.

Master Xu Yun continued to feed beyond the nether world and the fate of the universe, both inside and outside the temple.

Master Xu Yun is merciful to all living beings. When his filial parents die, he will also do the charity in person.

Master Xu Yun said: This kind of great good thing needs to initiate the mind of great enlightenment to observe the impermanence of the world and the distress of all living beings! I want all sentient beings to leave the pain of the Three Realms Fire House forever, and finally get the constant happiness of Buddha and Bodhi Nirvana. All sentient beings have unlimited vows.

Zhuge Changqing saw the story of Master Xu Yun's excesses in the Collection of Old Monk Xu Yun.

In the thirty years of Guangxu's reign, Master Xu Yun was sixty-five years old.

This year, Master Xu Yun went to Tengchong to collect money and lived in the Hunan Guild Hall. Before he could unload his luggage, several people in filial piety came to worship and salute, saying, "Please chant the sutras."

Master Xu Yun asked, "I am not a monk who specializes in chanting sutras."

Xiaozi said, "It's for you and Shangnian", The head of the guild said: "Well, the person who came today is the great-grandson of Wu Taishi. Taishi has a long life and is very spiritual. At the age of 80, everyone said that he is a good man. Taishi is very blessed, with dozens of children and grandchildren, several filial piety and integrity, and more scholars. When he died a few days ago, he claimed to be a monk in his previous life, and his will should be buried in monk's clothing, no crying, no killing animals, no asking witches to chant scriptures, and said that there would be eminent monks to transcend for him, cross their knees, and take off for a few days The eyes are like living things. I don't want you to come today. "

Master Xuyun agreed, and then went to Xiaozi's house to chant sutras and give alms for seven days

Local officials, gentry and people all came to enjoy themselves, and more than a thousand people wished to return. The local officials and gentry planned to keep me in Tengchong, and I told everyone: "This time I came to raise money for the repair of Jizu Mountain, so I couldn't keep it." Everyone was very happy to hear that and made donations enthusiastically. After that, I went back to Jizu Mountain, prepared food, built houses, made rules, sat incense, lectured, revived the instrument, and preached the precepts. In this year, there were more than 700 people asking for precepts. The monasteries in the mountains were also gradually reformed, including wearing monk clothes, eating vegetarian dishes, going to the temple, allowing foreign monks to list and wait

Zhuge Changqing suggested that beginners can do this:

   阿弥陀佛。

     福生无量天尊。

   施食,福报巨大、功德巨大,历代高僧大德都是施食的弘扬者。

    诸葛长青:阿弥陀佛。一代高僧虚云大师,始终持续施食。
   虚云大师1840年出生,世寿120岁。

   我国佛教机构的筹备首席发起人,并当选为全国佛教协会名誉会长。

   他与太虚大师、弘一大师、印光大师并称为近代四大高僧,更被誉为“禅学泰斗”。他铭记佛法在世间,不离世间觉”的祖训为佛法传播立下了不朽功勋。

    在中国近现代佛教史上,虚云大师是一位极富传奇色彩的绝世高僧。
   一、虚云大师犹如唐僧,孤身万里游,精进佛法。

   诸葛长青认为,坚定的信念和持之以恒的恒心,成就了一代高僧。虚云大师就像当年的唐僧,志存高远,学佛不停步、孤身万里游、弘法遍世界,令人赞叹不已。

   虚云大师的一生,可谓艰苦卓绝、相当丰沛,有人赞之曰:“志大气刚,悲深行苦”,更说“其建树、道德、悟证之伟大高深,为近千年所罕见”。大师在咸丰年间抛家别妻,落发于福州鼓山。

   在光绪年间跪拜朝礼五台,一步一叩,历时三年之久,风雨恒持。

   后来又远赴印度、南洋,效仿玄奘法师,跋涉万里,遍礼圣迹。

   在后来的数十年中,一身兼挑五宗法脉,重振禅门,中兴了鸡足山祝圣寺、昆明云栖寺、鼓山涌泉寺、韶关南寺、云门大觉寺、云居真如寺等六大古刹。

   他也因此而成为名震中外,为人们所共仰的禅宗泰斗、一代高僧。解放后,德高望重的虚云大师已是百岁开外的老人,他赴京参与了全国性佛教机构的筹组工作,被公推为首席发起人,并当选为全国佛教协会的名誉会长,成为新时代佛教界的领袖人物。
   二、恪守佛法在世间,不离世间觉”弘扬佛法。

   诸葛长青:阿弥陀佛。弘扬佛法,必须走近人世间,离开了人世间,佛法就无法传播了。莫忘世上苦人多,能度一个是一个。

   在佛学思想方面,虚云大师强调佛教的导引人心、趋于至善、移风易俗、辅政安民的意义。

  即使是在百岁之年,仍以护教安僧为本,恪守着“佛法在世间,不离世间觉”的祖训,努力适应新的社会环境和制度。

   三、遵守戒律、精进修行。勤修戒定慧,息灭贪嗔痴。

   诸葛长青:阿弥陀佛。虚云大师的“勤修戒定慧,息灭贪嗔痴”提醒人们要时刻精进飞跃。坚守戒律,必会有飞跃。

   大师亦特重戒学,并且一生实践,戒行精严,定慧圆明。在讲经说法或开示当中,也是反复强调戒律为佛法之根本。

   即便是在生命的最后时刻,对身边侍者的遗言,仍只是一个字——“戒”,他说:“今问我最后语,只有‘勤修戒定慧,息灭贪嗔痴’”。

    大师更主张四众弟子应当以“信”为基础,恒持修行。

   他告诫门人学子,佛法在身边呢,时时精进就是修佛法。

   只要信心坚固,一门深入,处处皆可修行,处处都是道场。所谓“运水搬柴,锄田种地,乃至穿衣食饭,都是修行佛法”。这就是劳动不忘修持,修持不忘劳动的“农禅并重”。

    四、主张“禅净双修”,实现飞跃

    诸葛长青:阿弥陀佛。禅净双修才会飞跃。印光大师说“有禅有净土,犹如带角虎,现世为人师,来生作佛祖”。   

  大师说:“心平何劳持戒,行直何用参禅!用功的法门虽多,诸佛祖师皆以参禅为无上妙门。所谓运水搬柴,无非妙道;锄田种地,总是禅机。不是一天盘起腿子打坐,才算用功办道的。”最可敬的是,大师虽为禅宗大德,但对其他教门决不排斥,主张“禅净不二”。他指出:“念佛的人,每每毁谤参禅。参禅的人,每每毁谤念佛。好像是死对头,必欲对方死而后快。这个是佛门最为悲叹的恶现象。”他的百年弘法,并不局限于禅,而是圆融诸法,实证众理,秉持“禅净双修”的理念。他对参禅的独特理解及深刻认识,以及由此而得的丰富实践,更是使得大师名震禅林。

    五、持续施食,弘法利生

    诸葛长青:阿弥陀佛。虚云法师持续施食。在走遍世界的过程中,用施食超度无量生灵,弘法利生,功德无量。

   虚云大师,走遍全国各地,从未停止施食。

   虚云大师不论寺庙之内、寺庙之外,持续施食超度幽冥、度化有缘。

   虚云大师慈悲度众生,遇到孝子贤孙父母去世的,还会亲自做施食超度。

   虚云大师开示说:......这种大善事,就要发起大觉的心来,观世间无常,众生苦恼!我要令一切众生,永离三界火宅的痛苦,究竟得至佛果菩提涅盘的常乐,众生无边誓愿度......。

   诸葛长青看到《虚云老和尚文集》中,记录虚云大师施食超度的故事。

   光绪三十年,虚云大师六十五岁。
    这年,虚云大师前往腾冲募化,住在湖南会馆,行李都还没来得及卸下,就有穿孝服的几个人来叩拜行礼说:“请和尚念经。”

   虚云大师问:“我不是专门以念经为职业的和尚啊。”

   孝子说:“是为你们和尚念”,会馆的负责人说:“是这样的,今天来的人,是吴太史的曾孙,太史生平,很有修行,在世八十岁,大家都说他是个好人。太史很有福,儿孙数十个,孝廉有好几个,秀才更多。前几天去世时,自称前世是和尚,遗嘱要以僧衣入殓,不许哭泣、不许杀牲、不许请师巫诵经,并说将会有高僧来为他超度,盘膝坐脱,几天面目如生。不想今天老师傅你就来了。”

   虚云大师同意了,然后到孝子家诵经,放施食七日.......

   当地官绅百姓都来随喜,愿归依者有千余人。当地官绅打算留我住在腾冲,我告诉大家:“这次来是为修鸡足山募化而来,所以不能留住。”众人听说都十分高兴,踊跃捐款。之后我回到鸡足山,预备粮食、建造房屋、订立规矩、坐香讲经、重振律仪、传受戒法。这一年四众求戒的人有七百余人,山中各寺院,亦渐改革,穿僧衣、吃素菜、上殿、允许外来僧众挂单等待等.......

   有些初学者,想迅速学会施食,不知道如何去做。

   诸葛长青建议初学者可以这样做:

   一是看几遍施食仪轨(文字版本)。熟悉施食基本概念、基本内容;

     建议大家,抄写或者打印出来,便于了解。
