Master Xuanhua: How did the Dharma founder spread Zen to China (picture)

Zen originated from the Buddha Sakyamuni smiling at Kasyapa.
The first ancestor of Zen Buddhism is Kayah.
After the Buddha Sakyamuni Buddha spread Zen, he predicted that by the 28th generation of the founder, Zen would spread to China, and Zen would flourish in China.
So, as the founder of the twenty-eighth generation of Zen, Dharma came to China and spread Zen to China, becoming the founder of Chinese Zen.
The first ancestor of Zen Buddhism in China is Dharma.
Zen Buddhism was first introduced into China by Bodhi Dharma, known as Dharma Buddhism or Buddha Heart Buddhism. It was handed down to Huike, Sangcan and Daoxin, and then divided into Nanzong Huineng and Beizong Shenxiu, known as "Nanneng and Beixiu".
Zhuge Changqing believes that we can touch the Buddhism today. We really need to thank the Dharma founder, the ancestors of all generations, the great virtue of all generations of eminent monks, and the people who spread the Dharma. With their selfless dedication, we can touch the great wisdom of Zen today.
Where is it better to learn about Zen Buddhism?
Zhuge Changqing recommends that you read the version of "The Sixth Ancestor's Treasure Tanjing" and "Vajra Sutra" explained by Master Xuanhua, and then read the relevant Zen books, so that you can basically understand the Zen thought.
The Venerable Master Xuanhua has great merits and virtues, and it is admirable to carry forward Buddhism.
In his book "A Brief Interpretation of the Six Ancestors' Treasure Tanjing", he described how Dharma spread Zen to China.
In September of the first ordinary year of Emperor Liang Wu (520 AD), Bodhidharma (the first ancestor of Chinese Zen Buddhism) came to China by boat from India, arrived at Deng'an, Guangzhou, and came to Jinling (Nanjing) to answer questions with Emperor Liang Wu. Because of no opportunity, he left Jinling and headed north for Luoyang.
One day, Dharma passed by the Dharma Master Shenguang's lecture and came in. He found that the Dharma Master Shenguang was eloquent and had a state of chaos and golden lotus. He knew it was a tool for carrying Dharma.
At this time, when a Buddhist monk from India came to listen to the scriptures, Master Shenguang could not help but feel slow.
After the lecture, he said hello to the Dharma Master.
Dharma asked, 'Excuse me, what are you doing here?'
The divine light said, 'We are lecturing.'
Dharma asked, 'What are you talking about?'
God said impatiently, 'Where are you from?'
Dharma said, 'From India.'
The divine light asked again, 'Don't India preach scriptures?'
Dharma said: 'Of course we should talk about scriptures. However, we are talking about the "Scripture without Words"
The divine light asked again, 'What is the wordless sutra?'
Dharma said: 'The wordless sutra is a piece of white paper. What are you talking about? The black is the word and the white is the paper. What do you say it is for? '
When God heard this, he was not happy in his heart, and said, 'I preach and teach people life and death.'
Dharma said, 'Why do you teach people life and death? Your own life and death are not yet! '
Shenguang thought, this black monk must be the incarnation of the Devil King to slander Sanbao. How about I try his magic power? So he used the rosary beads (made of iron, as a weapon to subdue the devil) to hit the Dharma master in the face.
At this time, Dharma was unprepared. Unfortunately, he was hit, and two front teeth were knocked off. Bodhi Dharma thought that if the teeth of the sage (the founder of Dharma is the sage of the fruit) fell on the ground, there would be a severe drought for three years.
For the sake of mercy, swallow two front teeth into your stomach. Therefore, the idiom "knock down the front teeth and swallow blood" is left. Without saying a word, Dharma turned and walked out of the ashram, stepped on a reed, crossed the Yangtze River, and came to the wall of Shaolin Temple in Song Mountain, Henan Province to meditate for nine years.
The god was complacent and thought that he was the winner.
As soon as Bodhidharma left, the impermanent ghost came and said to the Divine Light Master, 'Are you Divine Light?' Shenguang said, 'I am Shenguang. What's the matter?' The impermanent ghost said, 'I am ordered by the king of hell to invite you to drink tea and talk about how many sutras you have spoken? How many sutras have you read? How many sutras have not been spoken yet? ' Hearing the divine light, his soul flew out of the sky. Knowing that his life was going to end, he begged: 'Who can live and die without being controlled by the king of hell?' The impermanent ghost said, 'It's the black monk with a big beard and two teeth knocked out by you just now.' After hearing this, the divine light regretted that he should not have fired an open flame and beat the Sage of Testimony away, so he asked the impermanent ghost: 'Can I go to that monk and learn the law of life and death?' The impermanent ghost said sympathetically, 'Yes! But go and return quickly, so that I can make the assignment. Otherwise, I can't afford it. '
The divine light rushed day and night to catch up with Dharma. Catch up with Song Mountain and see Dharma sitting facing the wall. He was ecstatic and rushed to the front of Dharma, saluted respectfully and said with repentance: 'Please be merciful and forgive the disciples for their recklessness. I don't know that the monk is the sage of the fruit. I have offended many times. Please give me the law of life and death.' Dharma looked back, did not speak, and continued to meditate.
Shenguang knelt in front of Dharma and couldn't get up. One kneeling is nine years.
We meditate for less than two hours. Our waist is sore and our legs are sore. We can't stand it. Or fight the delusion of eating or drinking honey water. In short, the mind is distracted, unable to control, and always wants to run outside. The spirit of seeking Dharma for the Dharma Master Shenguang forgets his body. One kneeling is nine years. Who can kneel for nine hours, I'm afraid it can't be done!

One day, it snowed heavily, and the divine light still knelt in front of Dharma. The snow is about two feet deep. At this time, Dharma looked up and saw that he was deeply moved by the spirit of divine light. He asked, 'What are you doing here on your knees?' Shenguang said, 'I beg the monk to be merciful and teach me the way to hide from the king of hell.' Dharma said, 'It is not easy to seek Dharma. When it snows red, I will pass it to you.'
When God thought about it, Sakyamuni Buddha, when he was a Bodhisattva in the past, had sacrificed his life for half a sentence of verse. When I read this, I was blessed to the soul. When I saw a sword hanging on the stone wall, I took it off and cut off my left arm. Blood poured out like a spring and dyed the snow into red snow. Bring red snow to Dharma and ask for Dharma transmission. Dharma said, 'You break your arm for Dharma and seek Dharma sincerity.' So he taught the method of not writing, teaching others, pointing directly at the heart of the people, and having a clear mind to God, and renamed it Huike. Huike asked again, 'My heart is still in peace. I beg for peace.'
Dharma said, 'Bring your heart to Ruan.'
Huike was silent for a long time, and then said, 'It's impossible to find the heart.'
Dharma said, "I am at peace with you."
Huike suddenly realized and became the second ancestor of Zen.
Later, he taught the almanac to Sangcan, the third ancestor, Daoxin, the fourth ancestor, Hongren, the fifth ancestor, and Huineng, the sixth ancestor. At this time, Zen was divided into two schools.

The northern sect of Zen Buddhism, represented by Shenxiu, advocates that "to clean up the dust and become gradually enlightened". His verses:
The body is a bodhi tree, and the heart is like a mirror stand;
Wipe it frequently at all times, and do not cause dust.
Huineng is the representative of the Southern Zen Sect, which advocates' immediate enlightenment, becoming epiphany '. His chants:
Bodhi has no tree, and the mirror is not a stage;
There is nothing at all. Where does it cause dust?
Later, it was divided into five sects, namely Weiyang Sect, Linji Sect, Caodong Sect, Yunmen Sect and Fayan Sect.
Dharma Patriarch once prophesied:
I came here to preach the law to save the infatuation;
Five leaves bloom in one flower, and the result is natural.
As expected, when the sixth ancestor came, it was divided into five sects. This law has been passed down from generation to generation in China. Now the law has been spread to the United States, but there is no need to kneel down. As long as you practice sincerely, you can get this kind of Dharma.
Zhuge Changqing: While we praise the Dharma master who came to China to promote Dharma, we should also praise the master Xuanhua. He was the first person to spread Zen to the United States, founded the United States Dharma Buddhism Association, and Zen has a base for promoting Dharma in the West, which is admirable.

宣化上人:达摩祖师如何把禅宗传到中国(图)
禅宗进入中国,要感谢达摩祖师弘法,达摩祖师是中国禅宗第一祖。

禅宗,源于佛祖释迦牟尼佛对迦叶拈花微笑。
佛教禅宗第一祖师是迦叶。
佛祖释迦牟尼佛传了禅宗后,预言说,到了第二十八代祖师,禅宗将传到中国,禅宗将在中国兴盛。
于是,作为第二十八代禅宗祖师的达摩来到中国,把禅宗传到中国,成为中国禅宗开宗祖师。
中国佛教禅宗第一祖师是达摩。
禅宗,最早由菩提达摩传入中国,称达摩宗或佛心宗,下传慧可、僧璨、道信,至五祖弘忍下分为南宗惠能,北宗神秀,时称“南能北秀”。

宣化上人功德巨大,弘扬佛法,令人敬仰。
他在讲解《六祖法宝坛经浅释》一书中,讲述了达摩如何把禅宗如何传到中国的。
梁武帝普通元年(西元五二○年)九月,菩提达摩(中国禅宗初祖)从印度乘船来到中国,抵达广州豋岸,来到金陵(南京),和梁武帝问答,因不契机,离开金陵,北往洛阳。
一天,达摩路过神光法师讲经处,顺便进来,发现神光法师辩才无碍,有天华乱坠、地涌金莲的境界,知道是载法之器。
此时,神光法师见一位印度和尚来听经,情不自禁,生起我慢之心。
讲完经之后,就在达摩祖师面前打个招呼。
达摩祖师提出问题:‘请问法师,你在这里做什么?’
神光说:‘正在讲经。’
达摩又问:‘你讲的是什么经?’
神光不耐烦地说:‘你从什么地方来?’
达摩说:‘从印度来。’
神光又问:‘难道印度不讲经吗?’
达摩说:‘当然要讲经。不过,讲的是“无字真经”。’
神光又问:‘什么是无字真经?’
达摩说:‘无字真经,就是一张白纸。你所讲的经,黑的是字,白的是纸,你讲它做什么?’
神光一听,心里不高兴,就说:‘我讲经,教人了生死。’
达摩说:‘你凭什么教人了生死?你自己的生死还没有了呢!’
神光一想,这个黑和尚,一定是魔王化身,来诽谤三宝,我要试一试他的法力如何?于是用念珠(铁制,作为降魔武器)朝达摩祖师脸上打去。
此时,达摩没有防备,不幸被击中,门牙被打掉两颗,菩提达摩一想,圣人(达摩祖师是证果圣人)的牙齿如果落在地上,那里就会大旱三年。
为慈悲众生起见,将两颗门牙吞到肚中。所以留下‘打落门牙和血吞’的成语。达摩一言不发,转身走出道场,踩一芦草,渡过长江,来到河南嵩山少林寺面壁九年思禅机。
神光洋洋得意,以为自己是胜利者,不知达摩修忍辱波罗蜜行门。
菩提达摩刚走,无常鬼就来了,就对神光法师说:‘你是神光吗?’神光说:‘我是神光,有什么事情?’无常鬼说:‘我奉阎罗王的命令,请你去喝茶,谈谈你讲了多少经?念了多少经?还有多少经没有讲没有念?’神光一听,吓得魂飞九霄云外,知道寿命将终,乃恳求地问:‘谁能了生死,不受阎王所管?’无常鬼说:‘就是刚才那个满脸大胡子,被你打掉两颗牙齿的黑和尚。’神光一听,后悔自己,不应该发无明火,将证果圣人打跑了,于是乎向无常鬼要求:‘能不能让我去找那个和尚,学学了生死之法?’无常鬼同情地说:‘可以!不过速去速回,我好交差。否则,我担待不起。’
神光日夜赶路,急追达摩。追到嵩山,远见达摩祖师面壁而坐。欣喜若狂,急忙来到达摩祖师面前,恭恭敬敬地顶礼,忏悔地说:‘请和尚慈悲,宽恕弟子鲁莽,不知和尚是证果圣人,多所冒犯,请和尚赐我了生死之法。’达摩回头一看,没有说话,继续打坐。
神光跪在达摩面前不起来。一跪就是九年。
我们参禅打坐,坐不到两小时,腰也酸了,腿也疼了,就受不了。或者打吃饭的妄想,或者打喝蜜水的妄想。总而言之,心猿意马,控制不住,时时刻刻想往外跑。神光法师为法忘躯的求法精神,一跪就是九年,谁能跪九小时,恐怕办不到吧!

有一天,天降大雪,神光仍然跪在达摩面前。雪厚约有两尺之深。此时,达摩抬头一见,深受神光这种求法的精神所感动。便问:‘你跪在这里做什么?’神光说:‘恳求和尚慈悲,传授躲阎王之法。’达摩说:‘求法不是容易事,等天降红雪时,再传法给你。’
神光一想,释迦牟尼佛,在往昔作菩萨时,为求半句偈,曾舍身命。这念一起,福至心灵,见石壁上挂了一把戒刀,乃取下来,砍断自己的左臂,血涌如泉,将雪染成红雪。捧红雪来到达摩面前,请求传法。达摩说:‘你为法断臂,求法真诚。’于是将不立文字,教外别传,直指人心,明心见性之法传授于神光,改名为慧可。(诸葛长青:慧可祖师法名来历。)
慧可又问:‘我心未宁,乞师与安。’
达摩祖师说:‘将心来与汝安。’
慧可沉默良久,然后才说:‘觅心了不可得。’
达摩祖师说:‘我与汝安心竟。’
慧可豁然大悟,成为禅宗第二祖。
后将衣钵心法传授于三祖僧璨大师,又传四祖道信大师,再传授于五祖弘忍大师,又传授于六祖惠能大师,此时,禅宗分为两派。

禅宗北宗以神秀为代表,主张‘拂尘看净,成为渐悟’,他的偈颂:
身是菩提树,心如明镜台;
时时勤拂拭,勿使惹尘埃。
禅宗南宗以惠能为代表,主张‘立即开悟,成为顿悟’,他的偈颂:
菩提本无树,明镜亦非台;
本来无一物,何处惹尘埃?
后来分为五宗,就是沩仰宗、临济宗、曹洞宗、云门宗、法眼宗。
达摩祖师曾经预言说:
吾本来玆土,传法救迷情;
一华开五叶,结果自然成。
果然到了六祖时,分为五宗。这种法在中国一代一代传承下来。现在又把这法传到美国来,但是不需要跪求。只要诚心修行,就可以得到这种法要。
诸葛长青:我们赞叹达摩祖师到中国弘法的同时,也要赞叹宣化上人,他是把禅宗传到美国第一人,创办了美国法界佛教总会,是禅宗在西方有了弘法基地,令人敬仰。
阿弥陀佛。诸恶莫作,众善奉行。持之以恒、有求必应。
