The Story of Changing Fate: The God of Zao Guiding Him to Change His Fate

The "Vegetable Root Tant", a marvellous book of life wisdom, a treasure you should read 3 times in your life.

----- Zhuge Changqing

    Chinese culture is vast and profound.

    Throughout the ages, sages have left behind great wisdom that is simple, profound and enlightening to all beings.

    According to Zhuge Changqing, it is worth reading "Cai Gen Tan". Read it at least three times in a lifetime.

    Written by Hong Yingming during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, it is a must-read book for cultivating oneself and has been hailed as a marvellous book encompassing 5,000 years of Chinese wisdom in the world.

   Why is it called "Caigen Tan"?

   The name of the book originates from the saying "If you can chew the roots of vegetables, you can do a hundred things", and as the saying goes, "Warm clothes, fragrant roots, and a long taste of reading".

    Zhuge Changqing: If you can chew the roots of vegetables, you can do all sorts of things. If you can stop evil and do good deeds, honour your parents internally and benefit society externally, endure the trials of loneliness and frustration, you will be able to achieve something.

    "He Yiling, a scholar of Sichuan origin in the Qing Dynasty, was a vegetarian, poor and happy person, so he named the place "Cai Gen Xiang". This was naturally influenced by the saying, "If you can eat vegetable roots, you can do anything. Perhaps this was his motto, or perhaps it was his way of teaching his children and grandchildren to be hardworking and simple, to be patient and to do something.

   The importance of cultivating one's own body and mind is also reflected in the choice of "vegetable roots".

    The book is a collection of aphorisms on cultivating one's moral character, dealing with one's affairs, treating others and accepting things. Each aphorism in the book ranges from a few dozen to nearly a hundred words, making a total of 360. The aphorisms are beautifully written, well-crafted, short and concise, and are awakening, intriguing and profoundly philosophical. In the 400 years since it was first published, it has spread widely among the people and overseas.

    It is the crystallization of traditional Chinese culture, embodying not only the Confucian idea of the middle ground, but also the Taoist idea of inaction, and the Buddhist idea of the world. It has become a system of methods for dealing with the world and for dealing with people. The whole book is aimed at the pursuit of nobility and purity, and the deeper the deeper, the shallower the shallower.

   The original text and translation of this book are available on the internet and in publications for the reader to understand and read.

   Zhuge Changqing recommends that you buy a copy and look at it patiently and carefully, you will gain many insights.

    The following aphorisms and philosophies from the book are to be savoured.

    To take one step forward in the world is high; to take one step back is to take one step forward.

   To treat others with generosity is a blessing; to benefit others is to benefit oneself, the foundation of morality.

   It is better to be a good man than a good man, it is better to be a good man than a good man.

  To be clear in heart, to be brilliant, to be a selfrighteous man, to be a man of honour, and to be a man of virtue

  If you want to be a man of gold and jade, you must come from the fire.

   If you want to be a man of great virtue, you must be a man of fire; if you want to be a man of great virtue, you must be a man of ice.

  If you want to be a man of gold and jade, you must come from the fire.

  The spirit of harmony is indispensable. Sincerity and harmony are better than watching the heart.

  The true taste is light, the most human is constant, and the quiet is appropriate.

  Don't be too strict in quietness, don't be too high in teaching

  In quietness, see the true and the false.

  Turn back with pleasure, don't let go of the heart, subdue the polite, kill the delusion

  Be calm and clear-minded, but not fat and sweet.

  Let the fields be wide, the benefits be long, the smells of the mountains, the temples and the scriptures

  Leave one step in the path, reduce three parts of the taste, no fault is merit, no complaint is virtue

  To become a saint, not to be overly concerned, and not to be overly anxious

  When a scholar is involved in the world, he must not be light on his likes and dislikes, but if he is light on his likes and dislikes, his heart, liver and guts will all be pried out by others; if he is heavy on love and hate, his mind and spirit will all be controlled by things.

  If you rely on your talents to play with the world, you must guard against the insects that shoot at your back.

   If you decorate your appearance to deceive others, you are afraid that you will have a mirror in front of you to look at your guts.

   It is better to make a man have a reputation in front of him than to make him not have a ruin behind him.

   It is better to make a man happy at first than to make him weary of long acquaintance.

  He who is good at enlightening the mind, let it be gradually opened because it is clear, not forcibly opened.

   Those who are good at moving people's minds, let them be reached gradually because it is easy for them to do so, and do not make it difficult for them to do so.

    以下是《菜根谭》的格言哲语,仔细品味:

    处世让一步为高,退步即进步的张本;

  欲做精金美玉的人品,定从烈火中煅来;

  倚高才而玩世,背后须防射影之虫;

   使人有面前之誉,不若使其无背后之毁;

  善启迪人心者,当因其所明而渐通之,毋强开其所闭;

  4. Abstain from eating meat.

  5. Do not engage in trades related to killing.

  6Whenever there is worship, regardless of what is being worshipped, use vegetarian dishes, flowers and fruit, not animal gifts.

  7. If you see someone killing a human being, you should discourage them or buy the animal to be slaughtered with money and release it. If this does not work, or if the person does not sell the animal, then you should have compassion for the slaughtered animal, and even better if you can recite the Buddha's name or mantra for it.

  8. Do not abuse the animal.

  9Other actions that are contrary to killing.

  10. Abstain from killing and releasing animals yourself, and advise others to do the same.
