Cultivate your body: sit quietly and think about your own faults; don't talk about others' faults

It is very important for life to "sit quietly and always think about your own faults, and not to talk about others' faults".

----- Zhuge Changqing

   There is a good saying in Qing-Jin Ying's "Aphorisms and Associated Walls": "Sit quietly and always think about your faults, and do not discuss others' faults in idle talk.

   According to Zhuge Changqing, this saying can be used as an important principle in the cultivation of one's moral character.

      What does it mean to "sit quietly and think about one's faults"?

    According to Zhuge Changqing, "Sitting in silence and thinking about one's faults" ---- means that one should sit in silence and reflect on one's faults, so that one can keep a clear head and ensure that one does not make mistakes.

   It is important to constantly think about whether there are any problems with one's thoughts, actions, words, good deeds, filial piety to parents, treatment of family members and other aspects. If you do, you should correct them.

   Confucianism advocates "thinking about oneself three times" and thinking about one's strengths and weaknesses every morning and evening.

   According to Zhuge Changqing, Confucianism attaches great importance to the cultivation of one's moral character. The most important thing for a person to strive for is to realise the ideal in life. What is the ideal life? The ideal of Confucianism focuses on "the inner sage and the outer king; to be poor is to be good to oneself and to be good to the world". To be a gentleman, one must be able to "meditate, be sincere, cultivate one's moral character, cultivate one's family, rule one's country and pacify the world". To be able to pacify the world and build a successful career, cultivating one's moral character is the key foundation. Mr. Li Weipeng, who is well versed in Chinese studies, summed up five key points that are worthy of careful study and practice by those who cultivate their bodies.

  According to Zhuge Changqing, every one of us should be "determined, well-educated, self-reflective, reformed and vigorous", and constantly improve ourselves in these five areas so that we can embark on a brilliant life. A gentleman should "cultivate his own body with a quiet mind and sincere heart, so that his family can rule his country and level the world".

   What does it mean to "not talk about people's faults"?

   According to Zhuge Changqing, "Don't talk about other people's faults" - meaning that when you talk to others, don't talk about what is right or wrong, and don't say anything bad about them. Firstly, this is in line with the sage's idea of "hiding evil and promoting good". Secondly, it is useless to say anything. Thirdly, it will generate negative energy in society; fourthly, it will cause conflicts and unnecessary trouble; and fifthly, it is a reflection of one's own high quality. If one has the time, one should try to be refined, do more good deeds and promote the good law so that more people are on the path of positive energy.

    According to Zhuge Changqing, if you are going to speak, say something good, something positive, etc.

    Zhuge Changqing: Confucius said, "If you talk smartly, you are not benevolent" and "If you don't want something done to you, don't do it to others". Be peaceful and strive hard.

    Confucius advocates the principles of "self-generosity", "internal litigation", "introspection", "self-reflection", "three introspections" and so on. "The Three Provisions", etc. It is important to find out more about one's own shortcomings, not to talk about others, and to improve one's own quality in general.

   Thirdly, this saying can be used as a motto for cultivation in life.

    According to Zhuge Changqing, on the path of life, one should stop doing evil and good deeds, honour one's parents, do good deeds and make positive efforts, and not waste time or say useless things. One should always remember to "sit quietly and think about one's own faults, and not talk about others' faults".

    This is a famous quote from Jin Ying's "Aphorisms in the Wall". Jin Ying's "Aphorisms and Associated Walls" is very good, and it is an important approach to moral cultivation advocated by Confucianism.

If you are so inclined, you can search for it and read more.

   Some of the aphorisms in the appendix.

Qing-Jin Ying's "Aphorisms and Associated Walls

Sit quietly and think about your own faults, and do not talk about the faults of others;

To be able to suffer is to be an aspirant, to be willing to suffer is not to be a fool;

To respect a gentleman is to be virtuous, to fear a villain is not to be considered incompetent;

Take a step back and let your heart be at peace;

If you want to make progress, you need to think about regressing, if you start, you need to think about letting go;

If you are pleased with yourself, you should not go back again;

Hold gold as precious, know that peace and happiness is worth a thousand pieces of gold; think twice about what you are about to do, and let your anger get the best of you.

Don't be greedy for unexpected wealth, for those who are content are always happy. If you can deal with things in this way, you will be happy for the rest of your life.

静坐常思己过,闲谈莫论人非;

能受苦乃为志士,肯吃亏不是痴人;

敬君子方显有德,怕小人不算无能;

退一步天高地阔,让三分心平气和;

欲进步需思退步,若着手先虑放手;

如得意不宜重往,凡做事应有余步;
